Modern computer networks make it possible for anyone to copy and distribute multimedia content (illegally) at low cost. The existent laws and regulations governing the protection of intellectual property do not offer enough protection against this. Digital Rights Management (DRM) can protect content and it also offers new possibilities for generating income. The platform that Odware uses for this, is amongst one of the best platforms in the world.
Films can be protected by means of encoding. This encoding ensures that when it is played with Microsoft Media Player, a so called licence-server performs an inspection. Based upon the identification of the user and his or her computer system, the computer system will or will not be provided with a licence. This licence makes it possible to actually view a certain film. The properties of the licence, for instance its validity, are determined by the manager of the licence-server. The technology makes sure that the encoder and the licence-server should have some sort of relationship.
The ODware DRM-platform includes these components, as well as an extensive backend that can be used to create and manage various types of licences, as well as distributing these in a controlled manner.
The DRM-system can be applied to a film content that is being streamed on request (on demand), or that can be downloaded. The content has been encoded beforehand, and stored on a server for distribution.
ODware can expand the platform with a live engine that can encode and distribute live streams in real-time. This system is suitable for producers who broadcast live, and also for surveillance companies that stream real-time camera images. Only those with a correct and valid licence can view the images.
